What is a Cataract (Motiyabind)?

A cataract occurs when the natural lens inside your eye becomes cloudy, causing blurred or dim vision. In Hindi, this condition is commonly known as motiyabind (मोतियाबिंद). It is one of the most common causes of treatable blindness in India, especially among people over 50 years of age.

The lens of your eye works like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina to produce clear images. When proteins in the lens break down over time, they clump together and create a cloudy area. This cloudiness gradually worsens, making it harder to see clearly, read, drive, or recognize faces.

The good news is that cataract surgery is one of the safest and most successful surgeries performed worldwide. At Indumati Netralaya, we have performed over 2,500 cataract surgeries with excellent outcomes, using modern equipment and experienced surgeons.

Symptoms: When to See a Doctor

Cataracts develop slowly and may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Watch for these warning signs:

  • Blurred, cloudy, or foggy vision that gradually worsens
  • Difficulty seeing at night or in low light conditions
  • Sensitivity to light and glare, especially while driving
  • Seeing halos around lights
  • Frequent changes in spectacle prescription
  • Colours appearing faded or yellowish
  • Double vision in one eye

Do not delay treatment

If you experience any of these symptoms, get your eyes checked promptly. Delaying cataract surgery can make the procedure more complex and may lead to complications. Early-stage cataracts are easier and safer to remove.

Types of Cataract Surgery We Offer

We perform two types of cataract surgery at Indumati Netralaya. Your surgeon will recommend the best approach based on the stage and type of your cataract.

Phacoemulsification (Phaco) — Blade-Free & Stitch-Free

The most advanced and preferred method — completely blade-free and stitch-free. A tiny 2–3 mm micro-incision is made, and ultrasound energy breaks the cloudy lens into small pieces that are gently suctioned out. A foldable IOL (intraocular lens) is inserted through the same self-sealing incision. Because no blades or stitches are used, patients experience faster healing, minimal discomfort, and quicker visual recovery — most notice improved vision within 24–48 hours.

SICS (Small Incision Cataract Surgery)

A well-established technique using a slightly larger 6-7mm incision. The cloudy lens is removed in one piece, and a non-foldable IOL is implanted. SICS is particularly effective for very mature or hard cataracts where phaco may not be suitable. It is a safe, reliable procedure with excellent visual outcomes and is commonly used in government-sponsored free surgery programs.

Both are safe and effective, and your surgeon will recommend the best option for your case.
